Video Editing 101
Master these core concepts to elevate your content from beginner to pro.
Part 1: The Foundation - Audio & Organization
Before you make a single cut, a solid foundation is crucial. Great audio and an organized timeline are non-negotiable for professional-quality video. They set the stage for everything that follows.
Standardize Your Audio Levels
Inconsistent audio is jarring for viewers. Your dialogue should be clear and present, while music supports it in the background. Aim for these target levels to achieve a balanced, professional mix.
Use Layered Editing
A clean timeline is a happy timeline. Organize your project by dedicating separate tracks for each type of media. This makes it incredibly easy to manage complex edits and adjust entire categories of sound or visuals at once.
Part 2: Building the Narrative - Pacing & Flow
The art of editing is in how you assemble your clips. These techniques control the pace, create smooth transitions, and keep your audience captivated by telling a seamless visual story.
The B-Roll Buffer
Show, don't just tell. Layering relevant footage (B-roll) over your main speaking track (A-roll) illustrates your points, hides cuts, and adds immense visual interest.
Master J & L Cuts
Create natural, cinematic transitions by letting audio lead or follow the video. An L-Cut is when audio from a clip continues over the next shot. A J-Cut is when audio from the next shot begins before you see it.
The 2x Zoom Trick
When you cut out filler words, you create a "jump cut." Disguise it by slightly zooming in on the second clip. This makes the cut feel intentional and adds emphasis.
Part 3: The Polish - Professional Finish
The final touches are what separate good content from great content. Applying color correctly gives your video a consistent, professional mood and a signature look.
Correction Before Grading
Always follow this two-step process. You can't achieve a good creative look (Grading) until your footage looks technically accurate (Correction).
Step 1: Color Correction
Technical Fix: Adjust White Balance & Exposure
Step 2: Color Grading
Creative Touch: Apply a "Look" or "Mood"
